Muddy Waters and Ocean Physics

I love working on commissions. I recently completed a group of watercolor paintings for the Director of the UW School of Oceanography. The paintings are destined to be retirement gifts for oceanography professors. Professors who I worked for, or who I studied with when I was an oceanography student.  I love that I can make something to show appreciation for their contributions to humanity’s understanding of the ocean. And, it’s fun for me to experiment with new ocean science subjects.

I had two themes for this project. The first theme was rivers and beaches and coastal sediment distribution. Muddy waters. The image: a river delta emptying into the ocean.

The second theme was ocean physics, how water moves and why. The answer: temperature, salinity, and wind. The image: an artistic rendering of an ocean depth profile examining temperature changes from the surface to deep water.
